  1. Why not use a large DC electric motor with perm magnets to eliminate the
    requirements of preexisting power to energize a magnetic field?

  2. not very efficient to convert your energy into electricity and then in
    onion cutting motion but electricity is more universal than onion cutting
    motion :p

  4. Well, the idea is a good one. But the electrical engineering here is
    horrible. The presenters syllabus in describing the electrical components
    and how they work is not very good. (okay, sorry, it’s horrific). The way
    this video shows how to setup an alternator to a mountain bike to make
    electricity is NOT valuable.

    The engineering and wiring of this setup has been overcomplicated by a
    factor of 10.

    The alternator mount is good and use of a serpentine belt is excellent.
    Everything else is a disaster 🙂

    1) use a single wire Alternator by GM – Delco or Nippon Denso Single Wire
    model if possible for simplified wiring. But even so, it is not hard to use
    other models. Best model is a heavy duty GM or Ford Alternator from a 3/4 –
    1 Tonne Diesel Truck. Designed for low RPM with output performance ranging
    from 100 / 110 amps @ 12-14 Volts (regular duty) all the way up to 230 amps
    (heavy duty).

    2) Use a decent Marine or Utility deep cycle 12 volt battery. They are
    designed for storage of power and can reserve Amps. Those “series
    batteries” would fry or worse, start a fire.

    3) The choice of inverter is critical. The more amps is can draw, the
    stronger the storage battery must be. Sudden demands on the ‘electrical”
    system can exceed the limits of the alternators internal regulator creating
    severe damage to the amplifier, alternator and the device that is plugged
    in. The battery saves the inverter – literally. Inverters are all rated
    differently. You can buy them in different capacities, something that
    wasn’t mentioned and an important consideration. Inverters are available up
    to 10,000 watts peak power. The most common ones are 300 – 600 watts.

    4) Run the Alternator to the battery (positive to Positive post) with a 12V
    two pole switch in the middle. The switch ensures that the alternator’s
    exciter circuit does not drain the battery when not in use.

    4A) Bolt with heavy gauge electrical eyelet the Black Ground wire to case
    of alternator to negative post of battery.

    5) Run Inverter red lead to positive post of battery

    6) Run Inverter black lead to negative post of battery

    You’re done.

    Start peddling!

    Follow these steps and you would actually have a project with an actual
    benefit instead of say, a fire, electric shock or short circuit that ruins
    your electrical devices. A word of caution, most consumer inverters get
    hot, they are not designed for long periods of continuous use exceeding 12
    hours for anyone cycle period.

  5. Technically it’s great but a very expensive investment because the cost of
    the bike. I can’t even afford to change 15 energy wasting GU10 bubs to
    LEDs because of the price. I save by simply using them only when really
    needed. This contraption creates clutter and looks ridiculous in a living
    space. What’s wrong with chopping oinons by hand?

    you have a fat wife, you can make her bike to power the stove or oven.

  8. I wonder if you could add a 2nd pulley to the alternator, to spin a 2nd
    alternator, and get more energy without noticeably more resistance ? I
    wonder if you could add batteries and maybe a solar panel, then exercise
    for an hour a day to run a small house or cabin ? I dig this :)

  9. or you could just connect the wheel to the blade and start pedaling, dont
    need to change the energy to electric and can save some amount of energy :D
