    Solid system for wheel security, though there aren’t an infinite number of key possibilities, a crook would need to buy quite a few sets to collect them all and then spend a great deal of time figuring out which would fit your bike. I wouldn’t trust a $1000 wheel set to these alone, but for a mid range commuter bike with some fairly generic wheels these can’t be beat and makes your bike a much less attractive target for amateur theft overall.

    These are skewers that replace the quick-release skewers on your wheels. If your wheels don’t have quick releases and instead attach using axle nuts, Pinhead makes a different product: http://www.amazon.com/Pinhead-Locking-Wheel-Axle-Nuts/dp/B005GEZFLE

    For those wondering if the size of these are compatible with your wheels… The front wheel skewer is listed at 120mm, and the rear wheel skewer is 155mm. If you have a wider bike, like a fat mountain bike or possibly a trail-style hybrid, these may not be long enough to fit.

    I recommend that you check the tightness after riding. After finger-snugging the nut, the manual instructs you to turn it with the key-wrench somewhere in the 0.5 and 1.5 rotation range. After my first time installing, turning the nuts 1.25 rotations, I found the wheels dangerously loose after about 30 miles. I discovered this after needing to do a short walk of shame home from work, because my rear wheel had loosened to the point of shifting in the frame and jamming against the brake pad, and I didn’t have the key with me. (They only give you one key, and I don’t trust myself to carry it around.)

    Update: I’m not sure if I’m an idiot or if I’ve just installed them wrong, but I find it difficult to get these tight enough to prevent loosening over time. Personally, I just crank them as hard as I can, instructions be damned. Nowadays I just make checking them part of my normal maintenance routine; every week or two when I’m topping off the air in the tires or whatever, I double-check the skewer tightness. Usually one or both has loosened a bit. It makes me a bit nervous, because I don’t want the front wheel to have any issues while riding…

    If you think about the torque required to secure an axle nut for a person of normal strength and a short 6″ wrench, usually the advice is to turn it about as hard as you can. If you think about it, the key that locks the Pinhead skewer functions like a 2.5″ wrench. With such a small lever, it may explain why I’m finding it so hard to get enough tightness. Again, I’m not sure if I’m a weakling or an idiot, because nobody else seems to mention this as a problem, but please be careful.
