Q&A: Is it necessary to have a speed controller on electric motor?

Question by Matthew: Is it necessary to have a speed controller on electric motor?
im unclear if i need a speed control for a 24 volt electric bike motor, instead of just a throttle. i want to know why i would need a speed control if i dont need the speed controlled? is it to save the battery? i have also been working on an electric golf cart and was thinking of removing the controller. is this possible? what exactly does the speed controller do?
thanks

The throttle is a speed controller. Most motors will work without them. It changes the voltage to the motor. You can leave it off if you securely duct tape yourself to the vehicle and have lots of insurance.
