I made this short video about the electric bike kit from Clean Republic. www.electric-bike-kit.com It was only 0 and a shipping fee for the SLA (Sealed Lead Acid battery version).Sorry that I am so tired when I made the video a few minutes ago. When I described the wheel not being on the rim I meant the tire instead. When I am exhausted I sometimes say the wrong words and for me it’s been a very long day. Anyway the finished kit seems to work well but the instructions should have been vastly more concise,descriptive with illustrations (My criticism here about the poor instructions included with the kit),Edit- I noticed that Clean Republic has a wheel installation video here on youtube.I recommend viewing it if you get this inexpensive kit (helps a lot). www.youtube.com www.youtube.com I put on the wheel backwards at first (facepalm) and then later noticed an arrow on the hub of the motor indicating the proper direction in which the wheel will turn when powered (it also fit much better in the fork too which I noticed).Had I done this my install would have only taken me under a half an hour.Oops well It was corrected. Why an electric bike well see the staggering high efficiency as compared to other personal vehicles.Basically most of the mass being transported by a personal sedan car is the huge wasteful weight of the vehicle as compared to the single passenger (most often).The bicycle is of course one of the most efficient means of personal transportation and the

  1. Looks like a bit of a design flaw at the front – Turn the handlebars left or right and what happens to the front wheel? It appears to have nowhere to turn. Maybe you just lean left or right. But, they seriously undermine their credibility by having no movie footage anywhere of this thing actually working.

  5. This thing makes a segway look like a Ferrari. What baffles me is they actually expect to shell out close to 4 grand for product you dont see anyone riding ( for obvious reasons). Here is a thought hows about we all keep our 4 grand and just walk to where ever the hell we need to go lol.

  8. imagine catching a gust of wind whilst on this thing, you’l blow right over, or across the road, no wing mirrors too, it’ll never be allowed on the road. Great idea, a light compact electric bike I would buy one if it had a redesign to make it safer.

  11. I still can’t find any videos or pictures of someone riding one of these things. I am not convinced that it is practical nor comfortable to ride.

  12. O.K. I tested this kit with a cheap bike computer.With this SLA battery version kit and riding inefficiently (powered both on level as well as up hills) at 36 degree F temps outside the motor ran pretty well until about 5 miles total and was losing power until about 5 and a half miles.So that’s a indication of range with the 24 volt 8 amp SLA battery with this kit.It might do a little less if I was riding in an area with steeper hills though.Not bad at all.

  13. O.K. another small criticism (not big) about this kit from Clean Republic .
    The Red button on the handlebar comes off easy if bumped.I put some electrical tape over it around the Velcro throttle switch strap so it doesn’t come off easy.This works well as a quick fix.Also I recommend using electrical tape around the wire going to the throttle switch so the switch doesn’t move on the handlebar. This is the biggest problem with this kit and it’s very minor.

Well the 28 mph electric scooter would defeat the purpose of combining exercise and if one had problems with it and it couldn’t be pedaled unlike your faster than 20 mph ( 30 mph) electric bike (Also it’s much heavier too)t looks inexpensive though but one could just get a gas powered scooter instead.However if one could use that tax rebate it might be worthwhile as an additional supplemental electric vehicle.

By the way wouldn’t it be cheaper/better to just get a street legal electric scooter like say at MC Electric Vehicles in Seattle.Their G1 model electric scooter is $2,599 and has a 3,000 watt brushless hub motor (40 AH batteries).It says no WA state sales tax and $7,500 Federal Tax Credit on select new electric vehicles (don’t know if this applies to the electric scooters though).By the way I saw that they also sell electric bike conversion kits too.

  16. Yeah probably here one wouldn’t have problems (with a faster than 20 mph electric bike) .I do see all sorts of fools on bikes blowing through lights,stop signs,no helmets etc.Thanks again.

You would need DOT approved tires, approved lighting etc… so yes, it’s technically illegal, but if you aren’t riding like an idiot (using proper lane position, signalling, not running lights etc…) then no one notices or cares. The biggest difference I’ve noticed is the massive reduction in overtakes when riding with traffic. On roads where I might experience dozens of overtakes in a mile, with the assist helping me keep up with traffic reduces it to just a couple.

  18. The numbers given are not actually accurate (but commonly used), but keep in mind it is also the speed at which a vehicle of over a ton is impacting a basically stationary pedestrian. Big difference between that and a vehicle moving the same direction at the same speed…. think of Nascar and bump to pass. If you do crash at the higher speeds, you will slide further, longer and into things harder… but the odds of being rear ended go way down.

    Scott feel free to add more to this conversation if you wish.You have been graciously helpful and I appreciate the input from someone much more technically inclined.My bike by the way is not really ideal for city commuting (wrong type) however it was free.If I were to make a better e bike I would choose a very lightweight quality commuter style bike to modify and I might do so later on.

Continued -Going above the maximum allowed speed/wattage might not be noticed however it’s classified as a motor vehicle in this case.One needs a drivers license (O.K. got that),vehicle registration (plates,tabs,VIN) none and in some states vehicle insurance.Here in WA state a under 30 mph gas powered scooter or moped doesn’t need insurance (not mandatory).I suppose one could go to the trouble of getting a VIN if all the safety equipment was on the vehicle (turn indicators,brake lights)

  21. Well I recently saw a study that said in a vehicle vs bicycle impact (or bicycle vs stationary) at 20 mph the rider had a 5% probability of dying but at 30mph the probability increased to 20% (for death).
    At 40 mph it was drastically higher I can’t remember something like a 80% chance of death.
    I have seen a video on youtube of a electric bike owner being cited by several police officers for having a electric bike above the maximum wattage/speed.He was given 3 pricey tickets.

  22. Technically being able to push you over 20mph moves you out of the assisted bike category, in reality, no one cares because then you aren’t ‘getting in the way of cars’. But I can do mid 20’s on the flats without the assist when in shape.. can hit about 30 for a short sprint. Just can do that without getting sweaty with the assist for about 15-20 miles. The real nice thing about electric hub motors is that you don’t attract attention like the gas engines do.

  23. Thanks again Scott I see the Headway brand now.I was looking at a few others.
    My e bike only goes around 14 to 16 mph on the level street (However pedaling up a hill this kit helps a lot makes it easy) .However this 250 watt motor might be adequate for my needs.
    I don’t desire to go above the Federal,State limit of 20 mph (I have to keep it street legal and need it for in city travel needs).Thanks for the controller tip too.

Thanks for that great tip Scott.I was very impressed with your electric vehicle (saw your video) plus you know RR Anderson too! .Actually I was looking for better range too (looking to getting 20AH of batteries).I am rethinking this as my 250 watt motor is adequate and the more powerful motors will consume much more energy.I have to take that into consideration with total battery weight.I don’t want the bike too heavy otherwise I won’t be able to put it on the Pierce Transit bus racks.

  25. If you run the battery to cutoff each time, it’s life expectancy is exponentially shorter than if you only take it down 80%. So if you have a battery with 10AH that just gets you where you need to go, it’s not going to live anywhere near as long as a 15 or 20AH battery used for the same distances. Plus the larger capacity battery won’t get as hot under load.

  26. I recommend ignoring the number of advertised cycles, it’s about the C rating vs. how many amp hours you have available. You want to avoid stressing the battery too much. If you are pulling 25 amps, and are running a 10 amp hour battery, it better have at least a 3C rating, 15 amp hour could be 2C. My Headway is 5C, so can handle 50 amps draw without a problem. More amp hours… more distance and longer battery life due to less full cycling…. a LOT more battery life.

  27. Mine is a 350-500 watt kit… and the controller is designed for 36-48v. I started out at 36v with lead batteries… 18-20mph. 48v brought it up to around 22-25mph… a Headway LiFePo4 “48v” pack took it up to 31mph, with 16 cells it’s at 56.8v coming off the charger. The big thing isn’t the motor, it’s the controller. You’d need to check before raising the voltage if the caps and fets could handle it, mine has 60v components inside, so I’m pushing the safe limit.

  28. Scott never mind my question earlier about over volting.I see now that you mention a similar type of hub motor and not the same exact one as mine-oops.I understand now.Anyway yes I am interested in LiFePo4 batteries especially 2,000 cycle ones or better.Looking for good sources to acquire some.I figure that these will of course be costlier than the 500 cycle models (probably not LiFePo4 types but of another older Lithium chemistry battery technology)..

  29. Another question so you are over volting the motor to 48 volts (double the voltage).Do you need another controller or how is that done? (sorry I am a novice) I could see using 2 24volt battery packs in series for 48 volts.I recognize that the hub motor (and wheel) is very easy to replace and inexpensive.Even a shortened lifetime might be perfectly acceptable for more horsepower and extra speed.

  30. Thanks.I’ve heard about that.Fortunately the bike has steel forks so there is no issue there.
    Yeah I tightened the axle bolts quite well but thanks for reminding me I will check on them on a constant basis.And you’re right I do intend to upgrade to a LiFePo4 battery later on especially for the added range.
    By the way where do you recommend getting these batteries from ?
    Clean Republic has a Lithium Battery upgrade but I think that the ones they sell are only good for 500 cycles

  31. congratulations on going electric. Are those aluminum forks? That is usually a bad idea, keep an eye on the dropouts, they can crack. With only 250 watts, it may not be an issue.. just ensure the axle bolts stay tight so the motor doesn’t spin out in the fork, destroying the motor and the fork in the process. I’m running over 48volts of LiFePo4 with the same style hub motor, and they can fly… I recommend investing in a lithium battery pack when the lead acid dies.
