Valicom Team Member to Participate in “Death Valley” Ride for Juvenile Diabetes
Madison, WI (Vocus) October 12, 2010
Telecom expense management firm Valicom, is proud to support their own Sandy Thompson in the Ride to Cure Diabetes. Juvenile diabetes is a killer. Battling its affects can be a long, slow, painful process, which is probably why the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation chooses to host 100 mile bicycle rides for its fundraisers. The dedication and vigilance the riders must put into their training gives them a glimpse into the constant struggle facing those coping with the disease.
Sandy, a telecommunications audit Project Manager at Valicom, is well aware of that struggle. Her life changed drastically in March 2003 when her daughter Taylor was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes shortly after her first birthday. Then, three months later, Taylor’s twin sister Payton was also diagnosed. “It’s hard enough to raise twin toddlers. Now imagine raising twins that need multiple insulin injections and finger pokes each and every day,” says Sandy.
Since then, the twins and their family have lived with this chronic illness for seventeen years. And Sandy is not one to sit idly by and wait for a cure. She is actively fighting to help find one. As her daughters’ eighteenth birthday passes, and after months of training, Sandy will join over thirty other teammates from the Madison area on a journey to Death Valley California for the Ride to Cure Diabetes October 16th.
This will be Sandy’s second Ride for the Cure, having last participated in 2005, and she also plans to do the La Crosse, WI Ride for the Cure in 2011. She was motivated to begin riding again for the most heart-wrenching of reasons. The current team, “Godspeed Jesse”, is named after a close family friend of the Thompsons, a Madison-area teen who succumbed to diabetes earlier this year. Team members include many people affected by juvenile diabetes through a family member, a child, a friend or even themselves. Once in Death Valley, Sandy and Team Godspeed Jesse will join with other riders from across the country trying to reach a goal of million dollars raised for diabetes research.
“It’s been an exciting, if exhausting, time for me. What I am taking from this experience is that I’m doing something really great for myself and for my community, while raising money and awareness of diabetes on my children’s behalf,” says Sandy. “If my daughters can manage their diabetes day in and day out for their entire young lives, then I can ride my bike 105 miles through the desert.”
